CYC provides free seismic safety outreach to San Francisco’s diverse cultural and multi-lingual communities, with focus on renters, business owners, homeowners, youth and seniors, especially those with significant linguistic, social, and economic needs, living within and around the surrounding areas of Supervisorial District 1, specifically the Richmond neighborhood, to educate them on emergency preparedness and response. The program’s outcome objectives will be to ensure populations in the Richmond neighborhood are provided with increased education and awareness of the need to prepare for a seismic event, and that a high number of stakeholders actively attend and/or participate in earthquake safety trainings, workshops, and/or events within their respective service area and be provided with informational materials that will prepare them for a seismic or natural disaster and an understanding of what to do in the immediate aftermath.


Under the supervision of the Project Manager of the Seismic Safety Outreach Program (SSOP), the Community Advocate will provide community outreach, trainings and workshops to residents, youth, seniors, businesses and merchants within and in the surrounding areas of District 1; build working partnership with other community based organizations and city departments, engage in community fairs and events; and develop solution driven recommendations to create disaster preparedness communities.


  • Engage the diverse population in District 1
  • Engage in planning and development of educational curriculum and presentations, as well as multicultural events for District 1 residents
  • Conduct at least 40 workshops to District 1 residents per year
  • Outreach and provide referral and linkages to residents, community organizations, schools and merchants
  • Support the leadership development of youth leaders
  • Attend community fairs/activities, community initiatives, collaborative meetings related to community engagement and seismic safety
  • Assist in program documentation and reports
  • Other duties as assigned by management

  • Preferably Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Education, and other related fields or equivalent experience.
  • Two years working experience in youth and/or community development.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrate ability to work with representatives of government agencies, community-based organizations and the business community.
  • Knowledge about diverse cultures and ability to provide competency in working communities.
  • Knowledge of computer software, particularly MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work independently and as an active team member.
  • Able to lift or move at least 25lbs.
  • Must know how to drive and have a valid driver’s license with good driving record.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to pass TB health clearance and fingerprint clearance from the Department of Justice and FBI.
  • Bi-lingual in English and Chinese highly desirable.
