JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

The Community Youth Center of San Francisco (CYC) provides the youth of our city a sense of belonging and vital tools and experiences to succeed in life. Our services include academic support and college counseling, job placement and employment training, substance use and violence prevention education, crisis intervention and mediation, leadership development, technology and computer training. Position Event Assistant
Salary $23.00 – $23.00 per hour, up to 16 hours per week
Reports to Program Director
Status Temporary Part-Time, Non-Exempt (Position Ends: 3/28/2026)

Schedule: Saturdays – 8 hours/day; Fridays – occasional scheduled shifts offered in advance based on program/event needs (no guaranteed Friday hours). Event Assistant is not required to remain on-call or available when not scheduled. Standard California overtime, meal, and rest break rules apply.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Event Assistant is a multi-month street activation led by CYC in partnership with OEWD and Self-Help for the Elderly. The project aims to increase foot traffic, support small businesses, and reimagine Commercial Street as a welcoming, pedestrian-oriented connector between Chinatown and the Financial District.

From January through March 2026, the marketplace will take place every Friday and Saturday, transforming Commercial Street (between Kearny Street and Montgomery Street) into a safe, relaxed, and vibrant public space featuring local small business pop-ups, festive lighting, music, and community activities.

The Event Assistant serves as the front-line representative to help create a safe, welcoming, and organized environment for residents, seniors, families, and visitors while supporting small businesses and community partners during weekly activations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Greet and welcome community members, visitors, and tourists to the marketplace
  • Provide wayfinding, event information, and general assistance along Commercial Street
  • Support pedestrian safety and help maintain clear walkways and gathering areas
  • Assist small business vendors and community partners with basic needs during events
  • Monitor the activation area and report safety concerns, incidents, or emergent issues to supervisors
  • Help with set-up, breakdown, signage placement, and light event logistics as needed
  • Provide high-quality, culturally responsive customer service
  • Communicate clearly with team members and supervisors throughout each shift
  • Participate in required trainings and briefings
  • Complete other duties as assigned to support successful marketplace operations

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

  • Bilingual in Cantonese and/or Mandarin strongly preferred
  • Comfortable engaging with the public in a friendly and professional manner
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, including scheduled Friday evening shifts as needed and Saturdays.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
  • Ability to lift or move up to 25 lbs. (signage, supplies, light equipment)
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Commitment to community-based work and public space activation
  • Ability to follow safety protocols and program guidelines
