Gratitude in action: Thanksgiving in the Richmond, Bayview, and Excelsior

This Thanksgiving season, CYC brought warmth and care to San Francisco’s Richmond, Bayview, and Excelsior neighborhoods through our annual Turkey Giveaway and Luncheon. The event offered families and residents a comforting meal and a moment of connection during a busy and often difficult time of year.

We’re deeply thankful to our partner Gum Moon Asian Family Support Center, and to Moonstar Charitable Organization, San Francisco Human Services and The Sheriff and You Foundation for sponsoring the meals that made these gatherings possible. Together, we shared food, smiles, and a sense of community that reflects the heart of the holidays.

A season of care and culture

Across San Francisco, families prepare meals in ways that reflect their own cultures, histories, and tastes. Some may blend traditional American dishes with flavors passed down through generations, while others gather around recipes that have become part of their family story over time. However it is made, each meal represents care, creativity, and gratitude.

“Being here with friends and neighbors makes this day feel special,” Winnie, a Richmond District resident shared. “A meal like this shows how much our community cares for one another.”

At both sites, volunteers helped distribute meals, chatted with families, and made sure everyone felt welcome. These gestures, simple but sincere, show how care can turn a meal into something more, a reminder that we are not alone in the challenges we face.

Heartfelt community

For many youth and families, the holidays can bring extra stress and uncertainty. Events like the Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway and Luncheon help ease that pressure by offering steady support and a moment of relief.

“We are so happy to partner with CYC to help organize this year’s luncheon. This event provides connection and comfort to the community during a time when they need it most. We are truly grateful for this partnership,” said Brenda Lee, Center Manager of Gum Moon Asian Family Support Center.

Across the room, partners and community members felt that same spirit.“Events like this remind us what community is all about—showing up for one another,” said Assemblymember Matt Haney. “I’m grateful to CYC and all the partners who came together to make sure families across San Francisco can celebrate Thanksgiving with dignity, connection, and joy.”

Together, their words captured what many felt in the room: a shared meal can turn a simple gathering into something that strengthens community ties.

When youth thrive, communities thrive

CYC knows that when youth are doing well, their families and neighborhoods are stronger too. Our programs and partnerships help create stability and opportunity for young people, and in turn, that strengthens the community around them. When our community is healthy and supported, we all thrive together.

From all of us at CYC, we thank you for helping make this holiday season brighter for families across San Francisco. If you feel inspired to continue supporting our work, please consider donating to our Heart of the Holidays campaign. Your gift helps ensure that local youth and families can thrive year-round.
