Michael Wong’s ongoing impact on community safety and healing
At CYC, we are deeply grateful for our dedicated staff, many of whom reflect the communities we serve. Our team often includes former youth participants who return to give back, bringing firsthand understanding and a powerful sense of connection to their work. We also attract community leaders like Michael Wong, who bring years of experience and a shared commitment to equity and care.
This year, CYC is proud to present the Distinguished Service Award to Michael Wong, a leader whose ongoing commitment to public safety, healing, and community empowerment has shaped a stronger and more connected San Francisco. For nearly 30 years, Michael has been a steady presence and trusted advocate in neighborhoods across the city, offering support to those most impacted by violence and inequity.
Redefining community safety
Through roles at SF SAFE, the American Red Cross, and CYC, Michael has reimagined how community safety can look when it’s rooted in cultural responsiveness, language access, and care. He helped build a trauma-informed framework that now supports hundreds of monolingual Chinese and immigrant victims of violence each year. As one of the co-founders of the Coalition for Community Safety and Justice (CCSJ), he helped launch a citywide model for community-driven public safety, working across organizations and agencies to ensure everyone feels respected and supported.
Michael’s impact extends beyond direct services. He has brought Chinese and Black communities together through storytelling and cultural exchange, fostering solidarity that strengthens the city. In 2024 alone, he led outreach efforts that reached over 34,000 people, including 165 safety workshops and 42 public events.

Leading with purpose and integrity
Michael continues to lead with a grounded presence and strong sense of responsibility. Whether partnering with law enforcement or mentoring young community advocates, he shows what it takes to build lasting trust. His work reminds us that safety is not just about avoiding harm—it’s about creating spaces where people feel valued and connected.
We invite you to join us in honoring Michael at the 53rd Annual Youth for Community Engagement Luncheon on Friday, June 6. Buy a ticket to attend or sponsor one for a senior, and help us celebrate a legacy of service that continues to shape our city for the better.
