Agenda

This year’s summit features 9 incredible workshops created by CYC program participants from AAPI Youth Leadership Council, the District 7 Youth Council and the Supporting Transitions and Aspirations Mentorship Program (STAMP).

Workshops

Behind The Beauty Standard (APIYLC)

Have you ever thought of what determines if you are pretty or ugly? Well beauty standards do. Beauty standards are values that we are expected to follow in order to be considered beautiful or handsome in a community. But where do they come from? Why does our society care so much about them? How are beauty standards, misogyny, and sexism connected? In this workshop you will be able to discuss beauty standards, where they originate from, and how they affect today’s society.

Debunking Stereotypes: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly (APIYLC)

Has anyone ever made assumptions that hurt you? Or insisted that you were something that you’re not? In this workshop, we’ll identify various stereotypes plaguing the AAPI community and explain why they’re so harmful, even if some of them seem good. Through fun activities and games, we’ll explore  these stereotypes and debunk them, one trope at a time!

“What’s Passed Down to You” (APIYLC)

Have you ever thought about what you have received from those who have raised you? Some things that get passed down may be traditions, heirlooms, language, and perhaps even trauma. In this workshop folx will have the opportunity to learn and unpack what generational trauma is and how it affects you now. How does generational trauma affect crisis responses, parenting styles, mental health, etc? What did your parents have to go through that you have to go through now? What happened in history that affected not only your ancestors but you now? Join us to discuss more about generational trauma and what has been passed down to you.

Social Media… A Step Forwards or Backwards for Society? (APIYLC)

Social media is a very prominent platform in our generation. Although so many people use it on a daily basis, do we really know the effects it casts on us? In our workshop, we’ll discuss pros and cons of social media covering ways social media can deceive us, spotting credibility, and providing tips on how to differentiate whether or not something online is reliable. Join us in breaking down the myths of social media’s costs and benefits and learn more about social media literacy.

Civic Engagement 101 (D7YC)

Want to learn more about SF Government and how it works? This workshop will  equip participants with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to actively participate in their communities and effect positive change. Through interactive and engaging activities, participants will gain a deeper understanding of civic responsibility, democratic processes, and the importance of community involvement.

Fighting to Keep the District 7 Youth Council (D7YC)

San Francisco is facing a huge budget deficit and has drastically cut funding to a lot of essential community services. Working to address the funding shortfall for the District 7 Youth Council next year, we are creating a resolution and attempting to save our council from budget cuts. The council serves as a key platform for youth in District 7 to voice their opinions on city policies and local current events. Centering our city around young perspectives is imperative to building an inclusive environment and forward thinking city that can navigate difficult challenges. Join us to discuss the city’s funding decision making processes and learn about budget advocacy to keep the programs you care about running.

Relax and Unwind (STAMP)

Do you feel stressed after school? Perhaps sleep deprived studying for test after test? Then come by to our workshop to learn about how to manage stress and make slime while doing other fun stress free activities!

Innovate and Create: A Journey Into Creative Expression (STAMP)

Join us for a dynamic workshop designed to ignite your imagination and amplify your creativity. Through interactive activities, discover new techniques to unlock your creative potential. Come innovate and create as we work together to come up with fun and creative ideas!

Want to meet new people and conquer challenges ahead? Well, you came to the right place! Speed Networking is an exciting and energizing way to connect with people! It’s like a fast paced conversation where you get to meet a bunch of new people in a short amount of time.
